The History of Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908 in the United States, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her late mother. Since 1905, Anna Jarvis had been campaigning for a national holiday to be created that celebrated not only Mothers, but also those women in our lives who acted as role models during our upbringing. Anna Jarvis was a social activist, who made a profound impact unifying her own community of Webster, West Virginia during the American Civil War. Handwritten letters and other demonstrations of gratitude became the norm for Mother’s Day! Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated all around the world by grateful children, and spouses! Father’s Day which was first celebrated in Spokane, Washington in 1910 was created to complement Mother’s Day. While it didn’t catch on as quickly as Mother’s Day, it is an equally important day in showing gratitude to the male role models in our lives.
